Tantora Sundial Reflects AlUla’s Timekeeping Heritage
Standing at the heart of AlUla Old Town, Tantora serves as a testament to a rich cultural heritage that has been intertwined with the lives of the region's people for centuries. It functioned as a timekeeping reference that local residents relied on to determine agricultural seasons and the succession of the yearly seasons, helping organize farming activities and daily life. Today, it remains one of the most prominent heritage landmarks reflecting the area's history and authenticity.
Tantora is a sundial that uses the movement of the sun and shadows to mark agricultural seasons, the beginning of Al-Murabba'iya, and the four seasons. Used for generations, it reflects AlUla residents' deep understanding of their environment and how they applied that knowledge to daily life.
Tantora retains its distinguished place in the heart of AlUla Old Town, which dates back nearly seven centuries. Blending seamlessly with the town's traditional urban fabric of historic buildings, markets, and passageways, it tells part of AlUla's history and offers visitors an experience that recalls the social and economic life the oasis has witnessed throughout the ages.
