Farasan Fish Market: A Vital Economic Pillar for the Islands

Jazan Region serves as a vital contributor to the Kingdom’s food security, boasting a coastline of over 330 kilometers and an annual production of 6,394 tons of fish and crustaceans. At the center of this industry, the Farasan Islands fish market acts as a primary economic and social pillar, supporting over 50% of the local population who rely on fishing for their livelihood.

The market is characterized by its daily rhythm, beginning in the early morning as boats arrive with fresh catches and peaking after the afternoon prayer with a lively public auction.

Organized by the Farasan Fishermen's Cooperative Society, this auction handles between half a ton to two tons of fish during peak times. This process ensures organized sales and price setting based on supply and demand, maintaining the market’s status as a vibrant commercial hub.

Shoppers and tourists can find a diverse array of marine life, including grouper, snapper, sea bream, and the seasonal parrotfish, which is famously associated with an annual local festival.

Located near the island's primary harbors, the market offers an authentic experience of traditional maritime life while reinforcing Farasan’s reputation as a key destination for sustainable marine resources and cultural tourism.
