Bani Unaif Mosque in Madinah Reflects Efforts to Preserve Religious and Historical Landmarks

Bani Unaif Mosque in Madinah is considered one of the historical mosques associated with events from the Prophet’s biography. The mosque was established at a site where the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, once prayed, near Quba Mosque. It attracts numerous visitors who come to reflect on its distinctive architectural style.
The story of this historical landmark dates back to the Prophet’s ,peace be upon him, visit to Bani Unaif, during which he met the companion Talha ibn Al-Baraa while he was ill. The Prophet, peace be upon him, prayed at that location, and a mosque was later established on the site of his prayer. Initially, the site had no built structure, but it was subsequently constructed using black basalt stones from the volcanic harrah and mudbrick. However, only limited traces of its original structure remain today.
The mosque has undergone several restorations and rehabilitation works as part of the Historic Mosques Care Program during the era of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The implementation took into account preserving the site’s historical identity, leaving its roof open to maintain its historical character, installing spaced wooden columns to reinforce the stability of the walls and allow natural ventilation, and hanging lanterns for lighting in harmony with the mosque’s heritage environment.
The mosque’s floor is paved with white marble, and its outer courtyard is planted with shrubs and palm trees, alongside the dark basalt rocks that form the mosque’s historic boundary wall, creating a scene that blends simplicity with traditional beauty.
The mosque is located near Quba Mosque, to its southwest, and is best visited during daylight hours to appreciate its architectural details and observe its design elements.
